If you’ve ever had an influx of possessions you’ve probably thought about throwing them away or donating it. One of the most simple ways to get rid of stuff is to donate it at a thrift store. However, there can be issues with that. These stores are most often overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they recieve. If your belongings aren’t in good condition, there’s no way they’ll be able to resell it, and if they can’t resell it, it’ll just end up in the landfill. With it being summer, and cleaning on our minds, we thought it would be beneficial to give you some tips and tricks to donating.

Tips & Tricks To Donating:

• Make sure your items are in good condition. These donation shops are doing us a favor by taking these items, so make sure your items are in good condition so they can be resold.
• Call ahead to make sure they even want your item(s). They may not have enough room at their stores for your pieces, or may not need them.
• If you’re donating fragile items (this doesn’t include clothing) try and take it to the actual donation shop rather than a random donation bin where it can be subjected to damage.
• Remember that donation/thrift shops are just like any shops. They need to get rid of items quickly to turn it into a profit, so think seasonally when donating. If you’re donating Christmas goods in the springtime, chances are it’s going to sit there and later end up in the landfill (even if the quality is impeccable).

It’s also important to remember to not rule a single item out just because it’s broken, missing a piece, or easily repairable. There’s a lot of hobbyists online that will take parts of something and put them to good use. Down below we’ve rounded up some places where you can donate/trade your goods.

Where To Donate Clothing In Japan:
• Uniqlo will accept your old Uniqlo clothing back and donate it to people in need.
• H&M will accept any brand of clothing in any condition and give you a 500 yen coupon per bag for the next time you shop with them.
• RagTag is a secondhand store that will buy your used clothing as they see fit.
• Salvation Army will also accept used clothing.

Worldwide Donation Resources:
• Freecycle is a non-profit organization where you can give and receive items for free, in your own community.
• Olio is a site/app dedicated to free food sharing. Donated food can be raw, packaged, cooked, sealed, or open. But it just has to be edible and used within the use-by date. Olio is currently being used in 32 countries and it gives you the opportunity to not food waste.
• StreetBank is a place that can help you give things away, share things, and share skills all within your neighborhood (anywhere from a 1-10 mile radius).
• Trash Nothing helps you if you’re already a part of a freecycling group. This site acts as a custom email inbox for your freecycling groups and only the replies to your post will be sent to your main email address. Which can be super helpful because no one wants mass emails going to their inbox a day.

• 実際にお店に持ち込む前に電話して受け取ってくれるかを確認してください。もしかするとお店にはもう十分なスペースがなく受け取ってもらえないかもしれません。もしくは持ち込もうとしている物が必要とされていないかもしれません。
• 壊れやすいアイテム（衣類は含まれません）を寄付する場合は、損傷を受ける可能性のあるランダムな寄付箱ではなく、実際の寄付ショップに直接持って行ってください。
• 寄付/リサイクルショップは他のショップと同じであることを忘れないでください。 彼らは持ち込まれた物をすぐ利益に変えるために素早くアイテムを販売する必要があるので、寄付するときは季節物を考慮してください。 春にクリスマスグッズを寄付してもずっと在庫として店頭に並び、最終的に埋立地にたどり着く可能性があります（品質が申し分なくても）。
