In early October, I found myself viewing a quite precarious email in my inbox. Everyone’s all time favorite sustainable fashion retailer, Reformation has collaborated with fan favorite sneaker brand, New Balance.

As of last May, Reformation launched their first shoe collection that featured lace up sandals, and kitten heeled flats. But sneakers are a whole new realm for them. So what makes this shoe sustainable you ask? Post-consumer recycled polyester was used throughout, and the inserts feature a blend of EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) and Bloom algae foam. EVA is a sustainable alternative to petrochemical only foams. This blended foam actually helps clean up the environment while lowering the amount of fossil fuels traditionally used in shoe-making.

“Shoes made from components utilizing our Bloom Algae technology are the result of 225 bottles of filtered water returned to the habitat, and 21 balloons of C02 kept from entering the atmosphere.”- Bloom

Not to mention, the tannery that Reformation worked with used chrome-free tanning methods that received Gold status from The Leather Working Group; which is the highest level for environmental compliance that can be achieved within the leather industry. As reported in a WWD article, “Using eco-friendly materials and practices… only really matters if the companies involved are investing long-term in greening their supply chains.” Back in July, New Balance announced it had made two major climate commitments: joining the RE100 and signing the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action. Which all aligns with Reformation’s 100% carbon, water, and waste-neutral ethics.
