Typically, skiing and sustainability are two topics that aren’t commonly affiliated with one another but now that our climate is altering many outdoor sport enthusiasts have become more distressed about conserving the slopes that they cherish. With bustling mountainside lodges, water-devouring snow machines, and high-powered chair lifts it can be quite taxing on ski resorts let alone the environment. And because of this, mountains across the country have started taking steps to reduce their environmental impact by converting to renewable energy, ditching single-use plastic, finding more economical snowmaking machines, and using carpooling incentives for resort-goers.
According to sources from the National Ski Areas Association, Protect Our Winters (https://protectourwinters.org/), and Stoke Certified we were able to find out which U.S. ski resorts are kicking things up a notch in terms of their commitment to the environment. Take a look at these five highlighted resorts that are making an impact.
1. Aspen Snowmass, Colorado
Aspen Skiing Company’s has been pushing the needle in terms of their commitment for climate change advocacy and forward thinking environmental affairs since 1997. They are big proponents for capturing waste methane from a local coal mine to generate carbon and even built solar arrays and LEED-certified mountaintop restaurants. Protect Our Winters and Alterra have even been big advocates for electric services company Xcel Energy’s plan to close two Colorado coal plants and replace them with wind and solar- a move that will increase the percentage of renewable energy in the state from 29 to 55 by 2026.
2. Alta Ski Area, Colorado
The Alta Environmental Center is aiding efforts to reduce their ski area’s greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Alta Ski Area is also replanting Douglas firs to cover the installation of new lifts, installing solar arrays and encouraging eco-friendly educational programs throughout the mountain. They are also diverting food waste from landfills via the Wasatch Resource Recovery program, and are switching from paper to-go containers from their kitchens to reusable containers instead.
3. Diamond Peak, Nevada
Diamond Peak Ski Resort recently became one the first mountains in the U.S. to receive a Stroke certification, a new sustainability accreditation for ski and surf resorts. They did this by accomodationg free shuttles from town to the slopes, provided electric charging stations, free water bottle filling dispensers and millions of dollars of investment into local watershed restoration. Not to mention the entire resort is making a huge effort to run entirely off of renewable energy in the next coming year.
4. Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico
In 2017, Taos Ski Valley became the first ski resort in the world to achieve B Corp certification, a strict and highly reputable process that measures a for-profit company’s social and environmental performance ranging from employee benefits to energy/waste reduction. Their newest hotel, The Blake, earned LEED certification and their hotel restaurant has an uncommon yet really cool recycling program- where wine bottles are being donated to Earthship Biotecture, a local green building company for use in their sustainable buildings. The resort has also upgraded their snowmaking machines, added electric vehicles to their roster, and built a geothermal heating and cooling system for their hotel.
5. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, California
Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Liberty Utilities are collaborating to power the entire resort off of 100 percent renewable energy. When this change happens, the ski area anticipates reducing its total annual carbon footprint by half. They’re even increasing the size of their existing parking areas for people who carpool and are transitioning to stone paper for their trail maps. Though that doesn’t sound like much, these waterproof and tear-resistant maps will last longer saving about 170 trees and 136,000 gallons of water.
