A scary but all too real state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales and Victoria as they face some of the most destructive and catastrophic bushfires their nation has ever seen. “Since September 2019, at least 25 people have died and over 2,000 homes have been destroyed. Another 28 people have been confirmed missing after bushfires tore through busy tourist hubs in eastern Victoria at the turn of the new year. The scale of the threat is immense, and fires continue to burn, with authorities calling for people to evacuate their homes as the country braces for another weekend of catastrophic danger.” reports Cnet.

With Australia’s bushfires continuing rapidly, more than 20 million acres of land have been incinerated, which is seven times more than the 2019 Amazon fires, and three times the 2018 California fires. And now, it’s estimated that one billion (yes billion with a b) animals have been killed due to these fires. According to the Climate Council, bushfire conditions are now more dangerous than ever before, due to longer bushfire seasons, drought, drier fuels, soils and record-breaking heat. And climate change is the top reason as to why this is occurring.

Not only is this horrifying for our world and the people of Australia, but with these massive fires occurring also means the repercussions of this will be immense. Cnet explains, “Bushfires release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The gas, which makes up only a small percentage of the total gases in the atmosphere, is exceptionally good at trapping heat. In just three months, Australia’s fires are estimated to have released 350 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Experts warn a century or more will be needed to absorb the carbon dioxide released.”
